2024 Recruitment Industry Predictions

-- Read time:

Hi Recruiters,

I've got two words for you: It's BAAAAAACK.

That's right. In case you missed it, the 2024 season of Recruiter Therapy kicked off last week (shoutout to Daniel Harten, 👋 Angie Verros, Paul DeBettignies, and Steve Levy for joining). We'll be doing shows all year to laugh, cry, learn something, and spill a little tea. And of course, you're invited to the fun too. Join us to get that little (or big) something off your chest.

Excited to get everything ramped up in 2024? Me too. Let's go!

Rich Recruiting, Poor Recruiting

A wise poet once wrote, "Mo' money, mo' problems," but when we think about what makes a rich recruiting team, it's not all about the Benjamins.

No, in fact, the richest teams don't always have the most money. While they definitely have monetary resources, they also have a rich cache of intangible assets. Think about the best recruiting jobs where you were able to attract the best candidates and it was definitely not just about those dolla' dolla' bills, y'all.

As I was reading Kris Dunn's post about rich recruiting teams and poor recruiting teams, it really resonated with my experience.

As Kris writes, rich recruiting teams have natural resources on hand. A strong overall brand (not just employer brand) that impacts recruiting in a positive way is top of the pile. A brand that attracts applicants at a high volume level with a mix of paid and organic reach is a close second and third respectively as well.

Being part of a rich or poor recruiting team isn't about recruiter skill level. Great recruiters work for poor recruiting teams that have to fight for every req. Average recruiters work for rich recruiting teams that land candidates with ease.

Knowing what kind of team you're on helps you know how to operate. Recruiting teams without a lot of natural resources are going to fight hard for every conversion. You gotta be a machine. Rich recruiting teams need to stay humble in a world where it's easy to attribute collective success to individual skills. There are great recruiters at the best brands but they don't have to fight the same way poor recruiting teams need to.

As always, stay thirsty for your challenge, regardless of the type of team you're on.

Warning Labels For Jobs

"Do not take this job without alcohol." There are definitely some jobs where I could have used that warning label at least. But what if job ads actually came with warning labels?

That's why I loved this post from Jason Seiden about job ads that deserve warning labels. Is it time for a little truth in advertising, especially as we look to improve quality of hire in 2024?

It doesn't have to be boring or brutal. Have some fun but tell the truth about what people are walking into.

What would be on your warning label?

Cautious Optimism

What's in store for recruiting in 2024? The data says… it's complicated. But (and this is important) there are some mostly positive indicators for the state of talent acquisition.

That's what a reading of Employ's 2023 Recruiter Nation Report meant to me, at least. The brand behind Jobvite, Lever, JazzHR, and NXTThing RPO surveyed 1,200 folks in talent leadership positions and got some interesting insights.

For example, 86% of HR decision-makers are positive about the future of talent acquisition, and 61% of talent professionals expect to spend more on recruiting in 2024. Great news, right?

Another win for the quality over quantity people: Nearly half of talent acquisition professionals rank improving the quality of candidates as their top priority. More than 30% also say that they view quality of hire as the #1 metric for measuring success.

There are some headwinds. 57% of recruiters believe hiring new employees will be challenging in the next year and half think hiring will be turbulent.

While this is evergreen advice from me, I'll write it again: Let's continue to be strategic partners for the business and we'll ride out whatever comes our way. In good, bad, and in between times.

What else is happening in hiring?
