The Future of Recruitment

-- Read time:

Hi Recruiters,

I'm still relishing all of the top-notch advice, tips and inspiration that our speakers shared during the first-ever F.R.B.R. Conference. This week, I'm following up to share my favorite takeaways from the rest of the wonderful crew who joined us.

The lessons and insight from this talented bunch deserve more than one appearance in the spotlight, and everyone reading this deserves another chance to take it all in.

So, If you're into learning cool stuff about recruiting, you're in the right place.

Let's get started.

Stay Relevant

Someone had to touch on AI. Thankfully, we had expert recruiter and consultant Ronnie Bratcher remind us of the importance of keeping up with advancements in tech. In his view (and I agree), your relevance as a recruiter depends on it.

He was kind enough to share how he's gotten creative to test how a few new tools could be helpful for sourcing candidates or other recruiting research needs. You can check them out below:

The Three A's

Our very own Daniel Harten jumped on to share three of his biggest career lessons (or principles) which he feels are fundamental no matter where you are on your professional journey:

Attitude — For Daniel, it's all about putting your circumstances into perspective to take control of your mindset. And it's critical to remember that it takes daily effort. Daniel says a consistently positive attitude will change your life. If you're struggling to generate it for yourself, he recommends modeling someone else.

Hard to argue with that!

Activity — What are you doing outside of work to separate yourself from the competition? How are you applying those experiences to your recruiting practice? Daniel likes to be mindful of how his non-work self influences his work self. For example, he takes inspiration from his favorite movies to infuse his work with deeper meaning.

Daniel, I might have to ask you to skip Dune 2.

Aspirations — What's your vision for your life? If you don't know, you might find yourself trapped in the same old story each day of your life. To move on to something greater, you've got to get comfortable with the unknown.

I couldn't agree more.

Long Live CRM

Founder of Paired Sourcing Jeremy Langhans joined us to talk about the death of traditional sourcing. Basically, being “good” at sourcing is no longer enough. There are just too many tools out there now that have completely leveled the playing field — it's time we let the machines have it.

But what are sourcing tools not good at? Building relationships.

That's where recruitment CRMs (like hireEZ of course) come in. If your tech isn't helping you nurture relationships — to tell your story better than the competition — you'll struggle to stand out.

Sparkle & Shine

TA Manager Carrie Collier's personality is just infectious. She led with her passion for recruiting to share how recruiters can build a “toolkit” to sparkle and shine in their recruiting practice. A few of her tips:

Laid Off, Now What?

17-year TA veteran Nichole Foley talked about my favorite thing (hint: it's community 🤗).

Nicole shared her experience getting laid off during maternity leave and the steps she's taken to overcome the many obstacles that come with being out of work.

Her best tips to keep going when the going gets really, really tough:

#1. Take care of yourself before you try taking care of others. You know, put your oxygen masks on first.

#2. Don't spiral, go viral! AKA share your story online to create conversion, connect, and gain awareness of your situation within your network. Nicole had media stories written about her situation and had LinkedIn posts reach tens of thousands of people.

#3. Get out of your comfort zone. When opportunities do come your way, be willing to take them.

Because Nicole was willing to put herself out there, the community was able to react and come together to help her get on to the next chapter in her story. If you ask me, that's exactly what we're all in this for.

Thanks for sharing, Nicole. We love having you!

Think Ahead

Like a chess Grandmaster, Boolean AND Brews Podcast host @Mike Churidian talked about the value of thinking 10 moves ahead in your practice. For example, how better prepared can you be for every challenge if you get good at thinking through the “What IF's”, such as:

  • LinkedIn going down
  • Hiring manager changes requirements of a req
  • Your search string gives you undesirable results
  • Your slate of candidates bomb their interview
  • The time frame to get someone hired is shortened

The idea is to get yourself comfortable changing gears when something goes wrong — or how to be resilient when things don't go according to plan.

Be Bold

HR and staffing vet Michael Rasmussen CIR, PRC, SHRM-CP empowered us to be bold at every opportunity. Because if you're not moving through this life with courage, you're not realizing your own potential.

I love this message because it's so simple yet can be tough to tap into — it can feel so big. But Mike breaks it down into some very practical ways we can all get our hands around:

  • BE BOLD — Keep fighting for belonging for all
  • BE BOLD — Keep teaching your hiring managers that follow-up and closure matter
  • BE BOLD — Keep fighting for candidate experience and help your peers, hiring managers and leaders be more human
  • BE BOLD — Help other recruiters and sourcers always
  • BE BOLD — Master your craft, teach, and share

Fix The Problem

Last but not least, Steve Levy jumped on to challenge us with a very real question: Why have those in TA been fearful of speaking up and speaking out about bad behaviors, strategies, processes, systems, and metrics?

GOOD question.

It's time to speak truth to power, make change, and be courageous enough to do what you know is best for yourself, your candidates, and your organization. It really is up to us.

What's Next?

If any of these insights piqued your interest, please sign up to join us for round 2 of the F.R.B.R. Conference on April 2nd at 10 am CT.

Won't you?

See you next week.
