Hi Recruiters,
As we start the first lap of 2024, it's natural to try to sum up the year — our brains can't help but try to make simple sense of our experiences.
If you're like me, you may be reflecting on how the last 12 months have seen your personal relationships evolve (or devolve), how your view of the world has shifted, or how career moments (good and bad) have made marks on your journey.
What always seems to stun me though is realizing what has stayed exactly the same, despite so much around me feeling unfamiliar. For an example of the former, Spotify Wrapped reminded me that, like every year, Destiny's Child is still my most listened-to artist. I guess some things never change, including my go-to karaoke song.
Rebound Bound?
Although the way we sum up a year is weighed heaviest by the "big" moments, the truth is always more complex and chaotic than we're often able to compute.
With all the talk of retention woes, shrinking teams, layoffs, and the tightening of belts last year, most wouldn't have guessed that across all industries, hiring rates have continuously outpaced quit rates. Looking forward, Google research shows that 39% of hiring leaders plan to increase their financial commitment toward hiring in 2024, and 70% of U.S. job seekers are somewhat or very confident about their prospects of finding new jobs. It seems the common idea that "nobody is hiring" may be a little overly simplistic.
What I think is more accurate, is that the hyper speed and transparency of business and culture today have only put a magnifying glass on just how challenging the experience of job hunting has always been.
It's why, If you ask me, forces like the rapid advancement of AI, widening gaps in skills, and heightened tension between employers and employees coagulated in 2023 to hurtle us into a time where strategic talent acquisition practices are more critical (and more sophisticated) than ever.
It's time we up our game.
Being Better
Recruiters today have more access to tools, knowledge, and resources to improve their results than ever before. All you have to do is look for it (and then let the algos do their thing).
Just the other day I stumbled on this post from Thibault MARTIN sharing a simple checklist for how to make it easy to attract the right candidates:
Even cooler, when someone commented on the post to ask for tips on how to identify candidates' needs, Thibault not only shared the great advice of "run a thorough intake meeting with hiring managers," but also shared a free Notion template for intake meetings (Not gonna lie, that's pretty sweet.)
It just goes to show that there's so much out there to help anyone level up, and so much opportunity to level up for. As we enter a new year which will surely bring with it the need for new skills, roles, departments, and businesses, the potential for great recruiting is massive — It's why we started offering free courses for recruiters at Outbound Recruiting Academy.
So, take advantage of the opportunity this year to get a little better, faster, and stronger, even if it means reckoning with the unfamiliar.
It only makes sense.
What else is happening in hiring?
Kunwar's Korner
Kunwar Ishan Sharma here! With the dawn of the new year, we wanted to share two blogs about opportunities and trends for recruiters to capitalize on in 2024. The first blog covers areas of opportunity and the second captures some telling statistics that might inform the direction of TA moving forward.
Thank you for being a part of the community, and we'll see you next year.
